Lego Digital Designer Builds Your Lego Masterpiece (from Lifehacker)

Windows/Mac OS X only: Freeware application Lego Digital Designer is a virtual Lego kit for your Windows or Mac desktop. Once installed, you can either use LDD to build your own masterpiece from scratch or—if you're lacking patience—you can get a head start by using one of their starter models. With over 763 brick types to choose from, your LDD-design will have reached well beyond the limits of your normal lego kit. Once you've built the perfect prototype, you can upload the results to the Lego web site to order a custom kit with every brick you'll need included! Lego Digital Designer is freeware, Windows and Mac only.

Oh, if only I had the time to draw up a Lego model. I have a feeling that if I start now (8pm), I will be done around 9am tomorrow. I'll have to try this when I have the time.

Our Trip (2 weeks ago) to see Richard Dawkins in NYC

It's been 2 weeks and I'm just now getting around to posting about it.

Jess and I went to the New York Academy of Sciences to see Richard Dawkins speak on October 19th, 2009.  He talked about his new book (The Greatest Show on Earth) and took questions from the audience.

It was pretty cool because of the small setting.  There were only a couple hundred people there and we got to sit in the 3rd row.

Below are some pictures that unfortunately didn't turn out too well.  For some reason, neither of us are looking at the camera as he signed my book.

Columbian children riding long dangerous cable over raging river to get to/from school each day

I heard Kevin Smith talking about this video on SModcast today. It's funny because we have all sorts of luxuries here in the US, yet I can't just hop on a zip line like this to go places. Instead, I have to get in the boring car.

Funny "DON'T let the dentist fool you" advertisement

I found this ad quite funny:

The top picture is priceless.  I would think that they could find a "model" that didn't have a HUGE gap in her teeth.  Plus it's just funny that she seems so damned happy about it.

The bottom picture appears to feature a bullet hole in the one tooth.  Don't these advertisers have someone that takes a second look at these ads before they're published.

About the actual product ... Why I would I trust a process that a 'mom' discovered?  That's on the same line as taking Airborne "medicine" simply because it was invented by a schoolteacher.

Posterous FINALLY adds the ability to customize your page!

Hundreds of people have checked out my Posterous page and I'll bet that most of them were turned-off by the basic look.  Well, on Thursday, Posterous has changed everything.  We are now permitted to customize our pages.  Even the least web-savvy person can change themes and colors.  If you're into Photoshop (or another graphic program) you can finally upload a custom header.

The more advanced users can mess with the css and html to give their page a whole new look.  I haven't strayed into that territory yet, though.

So now Posterous allows you to create a (somewhat) custom-looking page that is very easy to update.  This actual post is simply an email from me sent to post@posterous.com.  Plus, Posterous automatically "autoposts" to Twitter (and other social networking sites) anytime you add something new.

I took 5 Minutes to Make a Clichéd Image of Myself

If you're the type that likes following the trends of avatar creation, check out obamicon.me.  I made this image from my normal avatar picture and I think that it turned out pretty well.  The only downside is that the lettering must be in all caps.  I prefer my screen name in all lowercase.

Also, it automatically adds their website logo to the top of the image.  I had to crop that portion out.

Am I going to start using this image for all of my online profiles?  NO.  I'm quite happy with the one I use currently.

Progress on the Kitchen...

We got the final prepping done on the walls today (which allowed us to start putting up cabinets).  We have mounted 2 of the 6 cabinets for this wall.

The tall cabinet was much harder due to it's size and weight.  I only got as far as putting the doors on that one and adjusting them for height and spacing.

Since we are basically done with the dust-flying portion of the remodel, we were able to pull the covering off of our new refrigerator.  We are so anxious to start using the kitchen in the next week or so.  We are starting out with just the basic kitchen things.  We'll finish the rest of it in the coming months.

By the way, I look like a complete bum in the first picture.  Dirty clothing, need a haircut and a good shave.

My rough design for the next portion of our kitchen

The "wet wall" (sink & dishwasher) is already designed.  This will be the "hot wall" (stove/oven & microwave).  I used SketchUp to design this section due to the ceiling beam that cuts down the middle of the room.  Once these cabinets are up, I will fabricate a housing around the vacant space created by the beam.

The open section between the base cabinets will house the oven.  The over-the-range microwave will go above it.

You can use SketchUp to model anything at all.

I've used SketchUp in the past to model everything from a sofa to an entire apartment. I'm just now downloading it to my new computer so that I can finish the design of our kitchen. I took many CAD classes in college and that has helped me with the basic understanding of transferring real objects onto a computer monitor. SketchUp is great because it is free (as opposed to the THOUSANDS of dollars that you'd spend on a copy of AutoCAD or Solidworks).

Here is where you'll find all sorts of randomness that I decide to share online. I have given up on the "fancy" blogging services and started to use Posterous due to it's ease of use.
